A superb collection of the top men’s and women’s teams of the United States will be on display in Doylestown this Sunday, September 10, at the 14th running of the Thompson Criterium of Doylestown. The race has been designated as the final event of both the USA Cycling Pro Road Tour (PRT) and the USA Crits national series, setting up a fascinating battle between two distinct styles of racers: pure short course racers versus long distance road racers.
Leading the women’s rosters will be the 2015 winner Lauretta Hanson of Australia, part of the United Healthcare UCI Women’s team and 2016 winner Skylar Schneider of ISCorp p/b Progress Team. Schneider, at only 18-years of age already has a World Championship Silver medal to her credit and is considered as one of America’s fastest rising stars. The perennial Laura Van Gilder of Pennsylvania, racing for the Mellow Mushroom team with hundreds of career victories, is having one of her best seasons in years and is looking for a win in Doylestown. Tiff Pezzulo of LA Sweat is the current leader of the USA Crits series and plans to be crowned overall champion by race-end.
Rally Cycling comes to town as the leaders of the PRT team classification and are bringing 2014 winner Shane Kline to lead their assault on the race. Kline is on the comeback trail after suffering a severe crash and a win on Sunday would confirm his return to national form.
United Healthcare Pro Cycling Team, second in PRT Team standings have two Tour de France veterans on their squad in Greg Henderson (NZL) and Janier Acevedo (COL) but most eyes will be on young phenome Travis McCabe, winner of three points (generally denoting best sprinter) classifications in major American stage races this year.
The third major team, and third in the PRT Team standings, is Holowesko-Citadel, led by Philadelphia native Robin Carpenter who is enjoying a dream season. Second last year, Carpenter is gunning to do one better on Sunday. USA Crits series leader Ben Renkema of the Palmetto State Medical Elite Cycling Team rounds out the list of men’s favorites, with the fierce sprinter looking to match up with the powerful road riders of the PRT.
The women’s and men’s races will be live-streamed to twin jumbotrons and across the internet on buckscountyclassic.com and other cycling related websites.
The famed Doylestown race, now in its 14th-year and boasting an international winners list of racers from Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Sweden and Australia, has always drawn praise from its competitors.
The nation’s top professional cycling teams will vie to be the first across the finish line and claim their share of the $25,000 (equal for men and women), prize purse. The high-speed battles include a 25-mile race for the pro women and 62-miles for the pro men all on a 1.4-mile racecourse that circles the heart of one of America’s greatest small towns and the famed Doylestown Arts Festival.
In addition to the men’s and women’s pro races, the Thompson Bucks County Classic will include a 25-mile amateur men’s race for USA Cycling category 2 and 3 racers, allowing new talent the chance to make their name in a pro race setting; a “high wheel” or “Ordinary” race for antique bicycles; a Cyclosportif offering 31- and 61-mile recreational rides with bicycle valets and a hospitality tent with VIP views of the pro races (registration is limited to 140 riders for each ride); and children’s races that take place on the professional racecourse.
